what is ‘follow me back into the sun’ about?

I remember the day we started writing the lyrics to this one, Rob came in and had witnessed a motorcycle accident on the side of the highway. he described some pretty vivid images from the scene that got us thinking about mortality and having to say goodbye and let go. impossible things to do.

i was reminded of an idea that was touched on in a book i read awhile ago but that has always stuck with me (Aldous Huxley- Doors of Perception)…the idea being that you can be so close to another person that you almost become one, you read each other’s minds, finish each other’s sentences. but even if you hold that person’s hand all the way to the brink of death, ultimately you have to cross that threshold on your own, alone.

saying goodbye is the hardest thing i’ve ever had to do. this song is from the other side, from the point of view of the person who is leaving, dying, going “back into the sun.” i imagine it’s pretty hard to be on that end of goodbye too.
